Birth of the Cool is a compilation album by Miles Davis, the iconic jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer who was among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

The album, which was released on Capitol Records in 1957, has 11 tracks recorded by Davis’ nonet over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950.

Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical musical techniques such as polyphony and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz.

As the album title suggests, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz.

Cool jazz arose in the United States after World War II and is characterized by relaxed tempos and lighter tone, in contrast to the tense and complex bebop style. Cool jazz often employs formal arrangements and incorporates elements of classical music.

Artists paying tribute to cool of Miles Davis are saxophonist Mike Eben, saxophonist Chris Heslop, tuba and bass trombonist Ken Kemmerer, drummer Dave Lazorcik, trumpeter Bob Meashey, bassist Steve Meashey, keyboardist Marty Mellinger, saxophonist Albert Rivera, trombonist Bill Smith and French hornist Al Stokes.
